Harold Gordon Jonasson

August 27, 1942 - February 8, 2023

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our Dad, Harold Gordon Jonasson on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 with his children at his side.

Harold was born in Winnipeg on August 27, 1942.  He grew up on the family farm near Amaranth.  The youngest of four children, he was predeceased by his parents Joe and Annie Jonasson, and his brothers Valdie and Jonas Jonasson.  He is survived by his sister, Gladys and sisters-in-law, Diane Jonasson and Merlaine Jonasson.

Dad met the love of his life, Norma Jean Smith in Edwin and they were married in 1965.  They remained soulmates for 57 years until Norma passed away suddenly in 2020. Many close friendships and meaningful memories were made when they built the family cabin at Sandy Lake. Designing and building the cabin was one of the many successful projects that dad accomplished. Mom and Dad spent twenty years together at their self-made paradise west of Brandon. Through their dedication and teamwork, they fulfilled their dreams of raising a family, life-long learning, and traveling. Mom and Dad loved spending time with family and were involved in a variety of clubs such as the Icelandic Club, square dancing, Habitat for Humanity, and volunteering at curling bonspiels. Dad spent his last couple of years in Winnipeg, living at Dakota House sharing his humour and wisdom with new friends.

Harold got his teaching certificate and furthered his education at the University of Manitoba. He became a successful teacher and school administrator in the Brandon School Division beginning in the early 1970’s. Harold relished his role as a school administrator and impacted the lives of students and teachers with his strong leadership style and passion for ongoing learning. Harold received his Masters of Education from Brandon University.  He was a huge proponent of creative and critical thinking, cooperation, communication and positive thinking.

Dad’s sense of fun, humour and generosity created fond memories for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad’s laughter will ring in our hearts forever.

Harold is survived by his son Doug (Lynne), and their children Taylor (Jarret), Alyssa and Kylie; daughter Cheryl (Shaun) and their children Ashley (Nathan), Shealynn and Mack.

He was Afi (great-grandfather) to Harrison, Olivia and Lincoln.
