PICKARD: 1935-2021. Jean Mary Pickard passed away peacefully on May 10, 2021 at the Palliative Care Unit of Brandon General Hospital. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Hazel Pickard, and her sister, Joyce Conrad. She is survived by her niece, Kathy McKenzie (Don) and nephews, Terry and Ken Haskins (Diane), four great-nieces, a great-nephew, and many second and third cousins.
Jean was born on April 7, 1935, in the family farmhouse near Roseland, MB. Adopted at age 5, Jean moved to Swan River to live with Jack and Hazel Pickard.
Jean received the Governor General award upon graduating High School, attended United College in Winnipeg and completed her Education Degree at Brandon University. Over the years, Jean earned the reputation of being an excellent teacher with high standards. Her contribution to Education, her effort preparing and creating content for her classroom and school, was incalculable. In 1983, Jean was awarded the Emerson Arnett Memorial Award for creativity. If you were a student of hers you might remember Happily Appley Days and the adventures of Naughty Nodnarb, (Brandon spelled backwards).
Jean would spend her summers travelling throughout the world, continuing to travel in her retirement years with only a handful of countries left unvisited. She loved meeting the local people, enjoyed the many different cultures, and especially loved spending time with the children she met along the way. She became a proud Foster Parent Sponsor for many children in many countries over the years.
Jean gave countless volunteer hours to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church women's activities, and many Brandon school libraries. Jean was an avid photographer and gave many presentations of her travels to many groups. She was always doing many different kinds of crafts and, latterly, knit hundreds of toques to keep many Brandonite's ears warm.
We fondly remember our Aunt Jean for her humor, the many themed birthday parties, her wonderful kindness, and her great generosity. We love you and miss you greatly.
Donations in memory of Jean may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 361 Russell St., Brandon, MB, R7A 5H6.
