My mom, Ruth (Pearen) Fay, and Jean were 1st cousins. We would spend lots of time with her, Uncle Jack and Aunt Hazel at Katepwa in the summer. I remember Jean's slide presentations of her latest trips and all sorts of exotic memorabilia. She also got me interested in dolls from around the world - a collection I still cherish.
She was a wonderful woman and I will miss her.

It was with deep sorrow that I read of Jean's passing. We first met in 1960 as new teachers in Brandon on staff at George Fitton School. Then in 1976 our paths crossed once again as educators...this time with classrooms across the hall at Riverview. From that time until Jean's retirement in 1985, her Grade 2 class & my Jr Special Class enjoyed many wonderful learning experiences together. Among my treasured memories are the educational field trips taken each year end...Jean would do most of the planning & always made learning 'FUN' no matter the setting! How we loved to sing!! Jean touched the lives of so many through her dedication as an educator and will be remembered as a special friend and exceptional teacher! My heartfelt sympathy is extended to Jean's family in this time of sorrow. May special memories be yours to cherish always! Virtual hugs, Donna Vrooman (Dagg)

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Jean. Jean & I had a connection through education, not to mention, her dad & my grandfather (Dr. E. T. Carrothers) were in the same graduation class at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in Toronto(1919). They both practiced dentistry in Brandon in the same time period. I got to know Jean through her good friend, Marg Crandle. After Jean retired, she still had an association with school & children. Jean volunteered at both the Fleming School library & the Green Acres School library, which span over a period of 16 years or more. Jean was a dear person & a good friend.

My sincere condolences to Miss. Pickard's family...
She was my 2 grade teacher in 1982. She was my favorite teacher all through my school years and will never forget her as she helped me with my shyness. Just through her true understanding that ever child is different and unique. I will always be grateful to her for that.
Also, forward 30 plus years later I had the privilege to see her again at Green Acres School Library and I couldn't believe she remembered me and certain details/memories from when I was in her class. Her memory was amazing!! We had a great chat and will always hold close to my heart.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Jean when she volunteered at the Green Acres School library. I always appreciated her dedication to helping our library, and learned many library skills from her. My condolences to her family.

My family moved to Canada in 1966 and I was a young girl in a new country. who was fortunate enough to have Miss Pickard as my first teacher.. I have many fond memories of her telling us and showing slides of her journeys around the world. LOVED HER AS A TEACHER , SHE WAS SO NICE.

Miss Pickard was my grade four teacher and she was an excellent teacher. Although it was over forty years ago I remember many details of my time in her classroom. Her films and tales of her travel adventures made a huge impression on her young students, but it was not until many years later that I truly appreciated her intrepid nature. It astonished me that she would remember me when we met - usually at the library. I regret not telling her how much I appreciated her pretending not to notice that I was leaving school each day with books that were not meant to be taken from the classroom!
