Obituary of Patricia Rae McManes
Patricia Rae McManes (nee Thompson) of Alexander, MB, passed away at Souris Personal Care Home with family by her side on Sunday, September 29th, 2024 at the age of 92. Pat was born in Beresford on March 17th, 1932 to Flora and William Thompson.
She attended elementary school in Beresford, high school in Alexander and Business School in Brandon. She worked at T.E. Elviss Wood and Coal and later at Wawanesa Mutual Insurance in Brandon before she married and moved to the farm. In her later years, she sold Fifth Avenue jewelry and was the custodian at Alexander School for ten years.
Pat married Hugh McManes on June 21st, 1952 at Knox United Church in Brandon, MB. Hugh and Pat were blessed with three children, Dianna, Shelly and Grant. They farmed together four miles west of Alexander in the Dalton district until 2000 when they moved to Brandon. Pat and her family spent many wonderful times camping, attending horse shows, and other community events.
Pat was always an active community member. She volunteered with the curling clubs (Alexander and Brandon), community club, United Church UCW, Explorers, C.G.I.T., and Sunday school. She received recognition for sixty years of membership in the Order of the Eastern Star.
The world of curling lost their biggest fan. Pat enjoyed curling until she was 84 years old, and attended a few Brier games. She received the Don Murray Memorial award for exemplifying dedication and sportsmanship of curling from the Brandon Curling Club.
She loved to watch curling, football, baseball and hockey on TV. She was a proper Blue Bomber, Winnipeg Jets and Blue Jays fan. She was an avid spectator of her grandchildren’s activities whether it be horseshows, soccer, baseball, volleyball, theater, concerts, and of course curling.
Pat was a social butterfly always out and about visiting, having coffee and attending events (booster dances, fall suppers, fairs to name a few) all over the westman area. Staying connected to friends and family was important to her. There was no such thing as come and go it was always come and stay!
She is predeceased by her husband Hugh McManes and daughter Dianna McManes, her parents William and Flora Thompson, brothers Jack, Gordon (Donna) Thompson, and sister and best friend Betty Rabe, sisters-in-law Donna Thompson, Bobby McManes, Marge McManes, and brothers-in-law Frank Rabe, Frank McManes, Melvin McManes,
Pat is survived by her children Shelly (Colin) Hargreaves, Grant (Ingrid) McManes.
