Marg was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 5, 1929, the second child to Gladys and Lawrence Tough. She graduated from Kelvin High School and attended Winnipeg School of Art for two years of evening classes. Following art school she was hired by the T. Eaton Co. in the Cosmetics Department. She was subsequently hired by the advertising department of Zellers where she worked until after marrying Herb. Marg met Herbert at a dance at the Winnipeg Canoe Club. The wedding took place on July 21, 1951 at St. Andrews River Heights United Church.
Herb and Marg were blessed with two sons and three daughters: Wayne (1953), Andrea (1954), Bruce (1956), Karen (1959), Valerie (1961). The family was raised in St. Vital on Lennox Avenue for 17 years, after which they moved to Brandon, Manitoba when Herb accepted a position of Plant Manager for Behlen Wicks Co. The family increased in size in 1973 when Grandpa Lofstrom passed away and Grandma Elin came to live with them until her death in 1986 at 96 years of age.
In 1980 Herb, Marg, Valerie and Grandma moved to rural Manitoba and built a new home overlooking the Souris Valley. Marg referred to this home as her little Eden. They lived there for 34 years until moving into a seniors’ condo in Wawanesa.
In addition to loving her family, Marg had many interests including gardening, knitting, sewing, playing cards, painting, Bible study, and volunteering in various capacities in her community. Before her hands gave out on her in 2013 Marg enjoyed creating pottery and participated in the local farmers markets with produce, baking and her works of art. Marg was a faithful member of Brandon’s Inner Wheel from 1979 - 2013 holding several executive positions. From 1997 - 1999 she served as the President giving her the opportunity to attend the international board meetings held in Great Britain. She also attended three international conventions in Sydney, Australia (1994), Berlin, Germany (1997) and Stockholm, Sweden (2000). These experiences enriched Marg’s life with opportunities to interact with diverse people from around the world and the privilege of addressing 4000 delegates in Stockholm in the 2000 convention.
Marg was also nominated for one of the Women of Distinction awards for her tireless community and volunteer work. After moving to Rotary Villas in May 2017, Marg returned to her love of art and once again took up the paintbrush and pencil to express her creative side. She will be missed beyond measure, but her kindness, gentleness, generosity; tolerance and resilience were great examples to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and will live on through them.
