Lori Wasicuna passed away unexpectedly at the age of 62 on October 12, 2023 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.
Lori was predeceased by her parents Winnifred Joan Wasicuna, her father Arnette Smoke, Aunt Evelyn “Elsie” Wasicuna, brother Cyril Bradley, Sisters Gwendolyn Wasicuna and Angela Wasicuna, Grandson Wahachaka Thunder, niece Tasheena Hall and nephew Kayne Smoke.
Lori will forever be cherished by her son Wacey and by her daughters Tina Wasicuna and Amber Wasicuna (Chaz), her sisters Debbie Smoke and Rhonda Wasicuna, grandchildren Alexis Fontaine and Wacey Chase Stevens, nieces Misty Pratt, Bianca Ironman, and Marissa Smoke, nephews Ren Smoke, Christian Smoke, Nathan Ironman, Graeson Wasicuna, and cousins, relatives and friends whom she all cherished and loved very much.
Lori was a wonderful, cherished friend in her community and had a kind loving heart that she shared with everyone. She loved spending time with her children, family, her friends, and her cat Jinxy. She enjoyed being outside and enjoyed going for car rides with her youngest daughter, Amber. Lori was looking forward to attending her youngest daughter’s graduation from Nursing School and was filled with pride and joy at her accomplishments in the program.
Lori was born Portage La Prairie and grew up on Dakota Plains and in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. She attended Rosendale School and Long Plain day school in her youth. She worked as a community health rep for Dakota Plains for many years and then continued her career as a Health Care Aide working in various hospitals and care homes in Winnipeg, Manitoba as well as providing home care and loving support to her grandmother Smoke. In her youth she enjoyed harvesting potatoes in the summer with her siblings and attending pow wows in Manitoba and in the United States.
She was always supportive with visiting and spending time with her elders in hospital. She also had a great memory and remembered specials dates, events, and family history. She was beginning to get in touch with her Dakota language and attended many ceremonies. She kept in touch with relatives and friends in Sioux Valley, Bird tail, Swan Lake, Long Plain and Sandy Bay.
A wake will be held at the Brandon Friendship Centre, 205 College Ave, Brandon, MB beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023. A funeral service will follow on Friday, October 27, 2023 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
