I grew up in Newark and lived across the street from Alfred-called Alfy. We were inseparable through grammar and high school. My interest in music came from the long visits at his house listening to WQXR. His treks with me through Weequahic Park where he collected bugs to take home -in his pockets. He was an outstanding student, good athlete and best friend.

Al was a joy to travel with and learn from. His humor, kindness, decency, passions and wide ranging interests made each day a pleasure. His curiosity and eagerness brought wetland plants and people together in exceptional memorable organized and impromptu field trips. I will never forget his tears at the sight of our first stand of blooming blood root plants. What an ally. What love he had for books, music, Marj and his children, his friends. One terrific human being and teacher.

To Marj, Debbie, David, Ellen and families we pass along our sympathy for the loss of Al. I remember looking out our window and seeing him loading up the family in the van. There was always some special excursion on the weekends and back you would come with treasures. When we were asked if you could pick our dandelions to try making wine, my Mom couldn't say yes fast enough. He was a good neighbour and our crescent was better for having the Rogosin's in residence. May peace be with you all.

At momentous times such as this I feel speechless. A glorious light has gone out of the world, and will not see one of its like again.
Al was always so good to me, from the moment I set foot in Brandon. We often had fun making puns. He, or I would make one, then the other would go and construct a pun based on the first, then the other would do the same on the second pun, maybe we would do another round, but by that time we (or at least I) would be exhausted. We would agree to quit and to go back to work. On trips into the countryside, he would be collection plants, I for fungi and plant disease specimens. The difference being he was all inclusive, I just for my courses.
When I was about to retire, and it was the last session of the Brandon Wine Society I would be attending, he got up and phrased what could have been a eulogy for a great man. I was dumdfounded at its eloquence. Al had such an eloquent way with words.
As usual, when we last met, there was continuous, stimulating and intellectual conversation for several days. We we went to the train, it only ended when the doors of the train shut.

Professor Rogosin was our botany prof at Brandon College back in the late '60s. For the lab in his taxonomy class, he would often bring flowers from the florist for us to dissect. One class, he brought irises. While he was briefly out of the room, some of us got interested in the flowers’ nectaries, and thought it would be fun to eat the petals to see if they were sweet. Not only did they not taste sweet, but our throats slowly started to get a burning sensation…we checked the textbook and discovered that irises have a compound called irisin, which sometimes poisons cattle. We gulped down huge amounts of water and/or went to the washroom to throw up. We learned a very practical lesson about plant family characteristics, and I believe Professor Rogosin retold the story many times (with his own humorous spin) as a cautionary tale to future classes, and at a class reunion, where the title of his presentation was, “Don’t eat the irises”. It’s one of our fun memories from college, and we always think of Professor Rogosin when the irises bloom in our backyard in the spring.

My most sincere condolences to Prof Rogosin's family. Prof Rogosin was a great teacher who was devoted his life to teaching. He was the best teacher that I have ever had. He had a great memory and was always helpful. His students trusted him and he trusted his students. Over the years at BU I recall his many exams, mid term and finals, where he would about half way through the 3 hour session he would stop the exam and tell us to take a break and go have a coffee. During the break no-one discussed the exam, not a single student. He had cultivated our absolute belief in him and in no way were any of us ever going to break that trust. He was always busy but he had time for each and everyone of his students.

A fine gentleman who will always be remembered with fondness by the Class of 74. Al was the faculty member assigned to chaperone our Fall Supper, an unenviable task which he handled with good humour. The attached photo is from our 2014 Class reunion.

Sincere condolences to Al’s family and friends. Even though Al was retired when I arrived at BU in 2002, he was in the basement herbarium most days. I had to develop biogeography labs for my students and Al was always giving of his time and knowledge to help me select lab sites, choose helpful field guides, and identify prairie plants. I also often saw him at Brandon Naturalist meetings. He was a wonderful man.

Al was one of my favourite professors when I worked at the university library! Once when I asked him to return a volume of Scientific American, he asked if he had to as his coffee cup was sitting on it!! Condolences to Marj and family!

I had the privilege of meeting Al more than 30+ years ago through our mutual love of photography with the Brandon Camera Club. Al always left us in stitches when he was the secretary of the Club. The reading of the minutes by hm left us rolling in the aisles. Of course he always had the name of every plant or flower on the tip of his tongue. He often loosely used the name of “Snapdragon” to add to the description. To say that Al left his mark on everyone who ever met him is an understatement . As I read his obituary, it only serves as a reminder of what an inspirational and diverse fellow Al was—to his family, his students, his colleagues and his friends. The pleasure is mine to have known Al and to have photographed with him over the years. The laughter and the memories will be with us all forever. My heartfelt condolences to Marje and family.

Al was one of those people that you always hoped would be a friend but seldom ever met. I was one of the lucky ones. Both as a Botany student at BU and then as a member of the Brandon Camera Club. Al was one of those rare kind generous genuine individuals. The joy and laughter that he brought both to us as a student and then as a club member will never be forgotten.

I have many memories of Al Rogosin, all of them good. I think my earliest memory was going to the Carberry desert with him and my dad and David. Through the years, he was always there at the University - literally spending more time than maybe any other professor. I am so glad that the herbarium is named after him. I remember my dad coming to visit me in Yellowknife and collecting specimens to take back for Al. He loved plants more than anyone I can think of - he was an exceptional botanist. He was also a loyal friend, and had a deep integrity. I know the memories of this remarkable scientist, teacher, friend, and most of all, husband, father, and grandfather, will live on because he made an indelible mark on all who knew him. I will be holding his family, Marj, Debbie, David, and Ellen in my heart during this sad time, and I will make a donation to each of the charities requested in his honor. With love, Mary Grace (Pepper) Kosta

My introduction to the environs of southern Manitoba was accented by Dr. Rogosin's enthusiasm for exploring plants, and the dedication of his herbarium. It was my privilege in later years to take him for a plant walk at a patch of exquisite prairie near St. Laurent. I cherish those memories.

Sincere condolences to all of you of Al's family.
I think of Al's delightful sense of humour, word puns, and all.
Once we asked Al to speak about teaching for BU instructors - after he won the Alumni Teaching award. His presentation was very informative, delightfully humourous, very worthwhile. So much fun!
As a student - way back when - I got to sit in on a couple of his classes. I remember his carefully drawn, always coloured diagrams of cells, flowers and the like. He was a very good instructor - kind, knowledgeable, one who understood what it took to be a good instructor.
Again, my sincere condolences.
Kathleen Nichol, recently retired from Science Faculty at BU.
