I missed my father when he went away to Cyprus. He was always very quiet when he returned home from such assignments. He loved being 'Sargent Joe' , but best of all he was my 'Dad'.

My last visits with Buddy were through video chats, and it was awesome, meeting some of his grandkids for the first time. I always felt it was like a visit in person..
The last visit was a phone call, with him and Tracy, and during this one he sang "Danny Boy" for me..this was a favorite song of our mother, so we heard it often. It's a beautiful farewell song, from a mother to her son going off to defend his country. You can Google it, sung by Daniel O'Donnell, but pay close attention to the words, that have helped my grieving process many times..
I include a picture of Vern(Sonny), me and Joe(Buddy) at one of our dad's birthday reunions.

Auntie Angela, that song was high on dad's repertoire, I didn't realize it was grandma Julia's favourite... I wish I had memories of her, but I wasn't quite 5 yet when she passed.
He loved everyone, but you were always so special to him... he was very fond of his kid sister

Additional to my childhood memories of grandpa are those of my adulthood-the best of which include introducing grandpa to my children. Nothing seemed to please grandpa more than to snuggle with his wee grand babies. When he and grandma came to Kenora to meet my first born, Mitch, he spent a considerable amount of time posing for pictures with Mitch on his lap. I did warn grandpa about those “sounds” and that I was still perfecting the art of the fold and pin cloth diaper... but grandpa continued on in his glory of getting pics with his first great grandson. Moments later, a river of baby poop covered his outfit! Grandma disappeared to the car, and when grandpa changed into fresh clothes, he still had the same outfit as before! My husband still talks about it and the fact that grandpa told him that he always kept a matching back up. The military lived in his soul. A loving, charismatic man we are proud to call family.

I have fond memories of Uncle Buddy’s visits to Grandma Jean’s farm here in Langbank. He always had that twinkle in his eye and could get a chuckle out of all around him. We are thinking of all of you at this hard time. With deepest sympathy.
