Obituary of Ina Belle Lacquement

LACQUEMENT: Ina Belle Lacquement, age 93, beloved wife of Edmond (deceased) passed away peacefully at her residence, Fairview Personal Care Home, on March 29, 2012. She was born to Harold and Elizabeth Mattatall on March 19, 1919 at Brule Point, Nova Scotia and was the third child of twelve. After graduating from school, she went to Truro and worked at Stanfield's making silk stockings (with the seam up the back!) When WW II was declared the soldiers were stationed at Debert just outside Truro. Of course, dances were held to see the boys off and it was at one of these dances that Ina met Eddy Lacquement from Swan River, Manitoba. Eddy was smitten and on February 17, 1941 they were married just before Eddy left for England. Mom moved back home to Brule Point to help her Dad look after her siblings and her young son, Gordon "Red". Eddy, wounded, returned to Canada early in 1945 where he was met in Halifax by Ina, her Dad and "Red". In short time, they boarded a train for Brandon, Manitoba where they lived for the rest of their lives. Daughters, Elizabeth "Liz" and Doreen were born shortly after Ina and Eddy settled in Brandon. Ina was a stay-at-home Mom until the children were all in school, then started working at Agnew Surpass "fitting" shoes where she worked until 1967. Ina loved to go on holidays and for three weeks every summer they would travel all over Canada and the USA. Ed and Ina loved to dance and spent many Saturday evenings with friends, square dancing. After retiring, Ina and Ed spent many winters at Magic Valley Trailer Park in Weslaco, Texas where they enjoyed countless "happy hours" with their friends. They also enjoyed camping and could be found at various Manitoba campgrounds most weekends, often with a grandchild or two, but their favorite was Sportsman's Park at Clear Lake. Ina joined the Legion Ladies Auxiliary in 1970. She was very proud to be a member and held many offices: 1972-73 Publicity; 1976 1st Vice President; 1976 Past Warden Medal (Sergeant in Arms); 1977-78 President; 1979 Past President; 1981 Treasurer and in 2010 received her 40 year pin. Ina was also a member of Central United Church. She loved her garden and gladiolas were her favourite flower. She always said she inherited that love from her Mother. The most important part of Ina's life was when she became a grandma and great-grandma. Her love for them was endless and they in turn felt the same way. When the family was all together you could feel the love between them and all were treated equally. She often mixed up their names but that just made their times together more special. Ina loved to cook and anything that was a favorite of one of the grandchildren was made as soon as they came to the house. She loved to play Scrabble and cards and seldom did anyone beat her. Ina is survived by her daughter-in-law, Marion Lacquement and granddaughter, Kim and great-granddaughter Danielle; grandson Rick Lacquement and great-grandchildren Blaine and Belle; granddaughter Tracey (Jeremy) Collyer and great grandchildren, Kaylynn and Drayson; daughter Elizabeth (Bruce) Batt and granddaughters Carolynn Batt and great grandson, Hunter; Alison (Chris) Lassiter and great granddaughter Lacey; daughter Doreen (Richard) Bruce and granddaughters Nicki (Vickie Milliken) and Tanya Bruce; sister-in-law Florence Lacquement and niece Sandy (Les) Currie and niece Karen Whitehead; sisters Vera Reid, Tatamagouche, NS and Mary Stallard, Hamilton, ON. Ina was predeceased by her parents, husband Ed in 2006, son Gordon "Red" in 2003, sisters Dorothea "Dot", Ella, Janet Mae, Greta and brothers Charles, John "Don", Ken, William and Angus. A Celebration of Ina's life was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel on Monday, April 2, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. Lawrence McInnes officiating. The Active Pallbearers were grandchildren Rick Lacquement, Tracey Collyer, Kim Lacquement, Tanya Bruce, Nicki Bruce, Carolynn Batt, Alison Lassiter and great-granddaughter, Danielle Lacquement. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery, Veterans' Section. Flowers are gratefully declined. As the grandchildren and great granddaughter said at the end of their eulogy "Our Grandma was many things to many people, but to us, she was just Grandma, and we are so proud and fortunate to have had her in our lives for so long. Goodbye Grandma…say Hi to Grandpa for us!!!!" Rest in peace Mom.
