Obituary of Anne Petrycia

With family at her side, Anne Petrycia passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Anne was born April 4, 1923 in Futory, Western Ukraine to Nikolaus and Anna Hrymak. From 1942 to 1945, she was forced to labour in Germany after German armies advanced across Ukraine. At war's end, she met and married John Petrycia in 1946 in Muhldorf, Germany and came to Canada with their first two children in January 1949. They lived in various parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba and moved to Brandon in 1962. Anne devoted her life to making a home and providing for her family. She was a loving, doting grandmother and especially warm and sensitive to babies and small children. Anne and John provided support to their families in Ukraine for many years and she saw her and her husband's families in Ukraine for the first time after the war when she visited in 1984 and again in 1992. Anne will be remembered for her busy hands and many talents. She was a superb seamstress and knit many pairs of mitts and sweaters. She needlepointed four poppy tapestries, decorated countless Ukrainian Easter eggs and embroidered numerous items. She baked the most ornate paska. Every spring and summer morning, she went to work in her flower and vegetable gardens before breakfast. While her health allowed, Anne was an active member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, serving on the executive of the local branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. She was employed at the Brandon Mental Health Centre for 13 years as a dietary aide. Anne was predeceased by her husband in 1982, her son-in-law, Bill Urichen, in 2001, and her sisters Stefanie and Mary and her brothers John and Nikolaus. She leaves in mourning her children, Lil (Luba) Urichen, Mary (Ed Langevin), Borden, Irene (Jake Kosior), and Alice, grandchildren Greg Urichen (Jennifer), Stefan Kosior and Kathleen Kosior, and great grandson Garrett Urichen. Also surviving are her brother Michael and his wife Maria in Ukraine. Prayers will be said at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Brockie-Donovan Funeral Chapel, 332-8th Street, Brandon. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 8, 2012 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue, Brandon. Anne will be laid to rest next to her husband at Brandon Cemetery following the Liturgy. Pallbearers will be Greg Urichen, Jake Kosior, Stefan Kosior, Brian Hominick, Myron Velykopolskyy and Mykhaylo Melnytskyy. The family is grateful to the staff on the West Wing of Rideau Park for the excellent care provided to Anne for the two years she resided there.
