Obituary of Robert Pringle Shinske
SHINSKE: Robert Pringle Shinske (September 5, 1928 - February 18, 2012). On a warm sunny afternoon, Robert Pringle Shinske went home to his Father after a hard-fought battle with B-Cell Lymphoma. He was born at home in Brandon to Mary and John (Jack) Shinske on September 5, 1928, the middle child of seven children.
As a young man, Bob worked at Modern Dairies; then delivered bread by horse for McGavin's Bakery before starting his own trucking business doing light deliveries.
He went to work at the Brandon Correctional Institute from 1960 to 1991 as a Corrections Officer and retired after thirty-one years of continuous service. He was a dedicated employee who rarely missed a shift all the years at the jail.
Bob had three passions aside from family time: baseball and golfing and bowling. From his early teens until he was nearly seventy years old, he pitched competitive and was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame on May 1, 2004. His proudest golf moment was at the age of eighty, when he made a hole-in-one. Bob also won several trophies for various bowling leagues.
Bob loved swimming, hunting, fishing and driving in which he made numerous trips up "North" to Cranberry Portage for spring ice fishing. He looked forward to snowmobiling on the Cranberry lakes in search of "fresh fish" for supper. He enjoyed playing cards and especially when he won "the pot".
He was an amazing grandfather, spending hours with Logan and Gauge in the swimming pool and other recreational pursuits.
He was a regular at coffee klatches, meeting "The Screws" or other crews at either the Town Centre or A&W, where they chatted about what's new and old and attempted to solve the world's problems over a cup of coffee.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, sister Margaret, brothers Jack, Bill and Jim; brother-in-law Jack McLeod, mother-in-law Maggie Dumas and first wife, Eleanor.
He leaves to mourn his soul-mate Jane, daughter Patches (Robert), son Robert, grandsons Logan and Gauge, his sister Jean (Harry), brother Don (Dee), father-in-law Roy, and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
As per Bob's wishes, a service is not being held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honour to the Brandon Humane Society, a cause dear to him, or to the Cancer Care of Manitoba.
The family sends many heartfelt thanks to the amazing doctors, nurses and staff that took very good care of him through his difficult battle with Cancer.
