Obituary of John Cornett

John Cornett of Brandon, passed away peacefully at Fairview Home on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the age of 85 years. John was born in Brandon on July 18, 1925, where he resided most of his life. He worked in B.C. for a few years and at the Brandon Cemetery, but he spent 41 years running a small store called Zipps Groceries, across from David Livingston School. Kids called him the "Candyman". He worked long hours, from ten to ten, seven days a week. The only time he closed the store was on Sunday, for one hour as he attended Mass at St. Joseph's Polish National Catholic Church, which was a big part of his life. In his retired years, he went a few times to Poland where he enjoyed visiting cousins and their families. He will be remembered for his generous heart and many acts of kindness. He was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Martha Korniat, sister Emily, brothers Louis, Peter, Thomas, Walter, Stanley Joseph and Tony, also his nephews Tom, Robert, Butch and niece Laurie. John is survived by sister-in-law Genowefa Cornett and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by Marysia, Irena, Staszek, Robert, David, Philip, Gienia, Baska Jim, Rosemary, Justin and other family members and friends. Prayers will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, July 1, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 2nd, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Polish National Catholic Church, 1111 Assiniboine Avenue, with Fr. Jerzy Urbanski as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery.
