Anne Chastko

Obituary of Anne Chastko

Anne Chastko (née Rebenchuk), passed away peacefully at age 98, on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Anne was born at Erickson, Manitoba on June 1, 1913, the third of four children, to Fred and Rose Rebenchuk. After her marriage to Stan Chastko on May 27, 1937, they had two boys Bernard and Robert. Anne and Stan along with the boys, began farming in Ozerna, Manitoba and after seven years they moved to Kelloe, Manitoba. Seven years later they moved to another farm near Kelloe and successfully farmed there for 30 years until 1981, at which time they retired and moved to Brandon. Anne was a character and when asked what she liked best about farming she would say "the hard work". But when asked what she liked least about farming she would reply just as convincingly "the hard work". During their retirement they spent their time tending their house and yard as well as a large garden. They enjoyed entertaining friends around their table and especially relished a good game of cards. They went on several holidays with son Robert, driving and camping together. Anne was the goddess of her kitchen and spent many hours both preparing for and then hosting family and friends. Each meal seemed to flow into the next with preparation and attentiveness and she treated her guests with that same devotion. She taught many of us her tricks of the trade in the kitchen for many dishes and particularly Ukrainian holiday dishes, which she prepared throughout the year. She also did quilting with a group of women in Brandon. At the time of her husband's death in 2003, she moved to Winnipeg's Heritage Lodge, then a year later to Riverview Health Centre, where she made friends with staff and residents. Anne will be greatly missed by son, Bernard (Vicky), daughter-in-law Rose and family; grandchildren: Lorne (Donna), Jacqueline, Raymond (Karlin) and Valerie (Dave); great grandchildren: Vanessa, Kari, Westan, Brenden, Noah, Levi, Trevor and Stacy; and numerous other relatives and their families. She is survived by sisters-in-law Anne Rebenchuk and Mary Rebenchuk. Anne was predeceased by husband Stan; her three brothers Bill, Mike and Nick; her son Robert and granddaughter Charleen. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St Augustine Church, 327 4th Street, Brandon, with Father James Ahaneku as Celebrant. A time of viewing will take place prior to the service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be: Raymond Chastko, Westan Chastko, Tom Chastko, Allan Rebenchuk, Paul Sorochynski and Jerry Kozicki; Honorary pallbearers: Mary Rebenchuk, Anne Rebenchuk, Theresa Michalchuk, Cecilia Munro, Ed Leganchuk, Rose Leganchuk, Gerry Reboul, and Carrie Sorochynski. The family would like to thank the staff of Riverview Health Centre for their years of care and compassion shown to Anne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre Foundation, One Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 2P4 or www.riverviewhealthcentre.com. Missed and never forgotten.
