Obituary of Ronald Alfred Griffin

GRIFFIN: Ronald Alfred Griffin passed away January 4, 2010 at his home, Valleyview Care Centre. Ron was born near Borden, Saskatchewan on January 27, 1916. He was the youngest of a family of seven and grew up on a farm. He joined the RCAF in 1942 and was posted to No. 12 Air Base in North Brandon. Always interested in farming, in his hours off he helped out on the McGregor farm, which was adjacent to the base. There he met his future wife, Ethel McGregor. In 1945, Rona and Ethel were married and took over the operation of the McGregor farm. At first, Ron supplemented grain farming with a dairy business but from 1962 gave his whole attention to grain farming. Ethel continued her nursing career at the Brandon General Hospital until her retirement in the late seventies. After Ethel's death in 1980, Ron retired from active farming, renting and then selling the farm, except for the home site where he lived until moving to Brandon in 2003. Ron enjoyed a long life and will be fondly remembered for his love of life and humor. He was a long time member of The First Presbyterian Church. His hobbies included bowling, golfing and refinishing old furniture. He especially loved spending time at the cottage he and his wife built at Sandy Lake. He enjoyed entertaining their friends at home and at the lake. Ron was predeceased by his parents, John and Elizabeth Griffin, four sisters and two brothers. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He will be especially missed by his niece, Marilyn Fruck, special friend, Alice Johnston, both of Brandon, and his many friends and neighbors. The family wishes to thank the excellent staff at Valleyview Care Centre for their care, concern, companionship and love. Ron will be missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 339-12th Street, on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Dong Ha Kim officiating. Interment will be held prior to the service at 11:00 a.m. at the Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ron may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, "Western Manitoba Cancer Care Project," 150 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
