Back in 1975 I was a messed up kid attending Earl Oxford School. I remember Mr. Green as a
kind, patient and jovial man, although sometimes we were at odds because I simply didn't have
a math brain. He took me out for lunch once at the drive A&W on Princess. When he left, he squealed
his tires out of the parking lot in his boat of a station wagon. A fond and funny memory indeed.

I recently found out that "Mr. Green" passed away. I am so sorry for the loss that his family has experienced. He was easily one of the most influential teachers i have ever had. I still use some of his math tricks as party tricks to be honest! I remember being a student at Earl Oxford and he was being let go by the new principal. Myself and my friends organized a protest and we picketed in front of the school for days against him being let go. We approached the school division and anyone who would listen, stating that he meant too much to us and he was too valuable as an educator. He left a lasting impression on everyone and will be dearly missed.

Dawna and Lisa, I'm so sorry for your loss. I always will have a soft spot for "Dick Green" as my math teacher, my coach and Phys Ed teacher but of course as my neighbor growing up he always had plenty to say! I'll never forget how he instilled in me his insistence that I could push myself harder. He was an amazing math teacher and one of the few teachers who was capable of commanding respect from his students effortlessly. I hope he's up there somewhere enjoying all those outdoor activities and sports he so loved when he was young.

Dick Green was a legend in our house! My husband Bruce Stobbe (deceased 2002), was fortunate to have Dick as a teacher, mentor and colleague. Mr. Green was a definite influence on Bruce's decision to obtain his education degree and pursue teaching. Many years later when my son Jay attended Vincent Massey, Mr. Green was a sub and Jay still talks about the "tokens" that Dick handed out for correct answers and for always calling him "Stobbe", like his Dad.
Sincere condolences to the family on your loss.

Everyone has mentioned "Mean Dick Green" (he was never mean) as a coach and gym teacher, and in both those roles, he excelled. He even told one of the sweetest white lies of my life when he listed me on the varsity basketball players' roster as 5'1" tall (the tallest I've ever been in my life....). I still use his catch phrase "there's no such thing as can't" when in a tough corner. BUT.... I want to also recognize him as the most inspirational math teacher I ever encountered. He had abstract math skills that went way beyond most high school teachers, which enabled him to play with math, using puzzles and games to engage the bright students. He helped me see the potential for math to be not boring, but exciting. His example helped me a lot years later when I left Manitoba grade 12 (no calculus) and entered McMaster University 1st year Honours Physics (which assumed you had a year of grade 13 calculus). I worked my butt off not to fail the first term, but because of him I knew what I was trying to achieve. It will be a long time before a junior high sees another like him. Thank you Mr. Green.

Dick and I taught together for 5 years at EO. Dick loved to pull pranks on the younger staff and on student teachers. My first year at EO, I went in that summer and decorated my classroom and was all prepared and organized. I had student taught at EO to finish the year, and he had already pranked me a few times. This prank however took the cake, as Dick came in the day before school started and moved all my desks and chairs into the boys bathroom upstairs. He took all the posters down off the walls, moved all the books off the shelves and took my chalk and brush and hid them in a locker in the hallway. I came confidently strolling into school around 8 a.m. to find my classroom bare to the bones. I was panic stricken - I ran around the school looking for all my desks and chairs - trying to find someone who could help me. After about 15 minutes I went into the staff room where Dick and Wayne were sitting sipping on coffee and reading the newspaper. Dick calmly lowered the paper and said, " Hey Curtis, how is the first day going?", to which I can't repeat what I said in return. They both laughed and Wayne suggested I go to the bathroom and wash my face to calm down. As I walked into the bathroom, they were both in the hallway laughing away. I spent the next 15 minutes frantically putting everything back together as best I could and continued about my day. I will never forget that day and many others that Dick, Wayne and I spent together at EO. Those were some great times. Jason Curtis EO - 1994-1999.

Mrs. Green, Lisa, family and friends, my deepest sympathy to each of you at this time of such great loss.
I was truly saddened to hear of Mr. Green's passing. I hope you take comfort in knowing how loved and respected he was by so very many.
Some of my fondest memories in life are of basketball days at Earl Oxford back in the day (early 1970's) under his great leadership. Not only did we excel at the game but learned great teamwork and sportsmanship because of his gentle example. Something we all carry with us in life. I hope you know how much we respected and adored him. We called him "Sir" out of the utmost respect.
He was one of the finest teachers I ever had, making sure we understood math but also giving his all as an excellent coach.
We all have many fond memories of travelling in vans and buses all over the place winning most tournaments we participated in. Other teams feared us Trojans as we were hard to beat thanks to him. We shared many championships, laughs, jokes and fun on those trips that we'll always cherish. (One or two of which we shared with you Mrs, Green that was such a fun time!)
All of us were sad to leave him and move on to other schools after Grade 9. We played a goodbye song to him, the ol, "To Sir With Love" and we meant it. We gave him a stuffed gorilla, which, many years later when I visited him at school one day, he showed me he still had it in his classroom after all those years and we proudly and lovingly reminisced those great memories.
Such a great man. Such a great loss. He will not be forgotten but forever adored.
To Sir, With Love.
Sincerely,
Jae (Judy-"21") Desmarais

I had grade 7 homeroom with Mr. Green, and science and geography with Mr. Palidwar, their rooms were directly across from each other, in the newly renovated (at the time) wing of Earl Oxford.
A pretty common occurrence I remember in the classes I had with them, is one would come into the other room, say usually somewhere between one and three words clearly in regards to an earlier conversation they had in private earlier, then leave. The other would often then go into the other's room and repeat the process after a minute or two. They were always so vague we never had a clue as to what it was in regards to. And they would never tell us no matter how much we bugged them. Sometimes I think they were just throwing random stuff out there to get us stirred up. Mr. Green was great, and I'll always have great memories of school with him.
