Mr. Stewart told me he'd hire me when a job came up, after I'd presented myself for the third time at his office one summer, after I'd just moved to Brandon, newly and still blessed to be married to the woman of my dreams, and after two of my hundreds of future colleagues and friends became ill that year (they're ok), I was fortunate to be the next man up, and what do you know, I'm successfully retired with a pension, just like he was a number of years later.
Needless to say, I hold Mr. Stewart in high regard as an educator, and in even higher regard for being the man, and a man of his word

Marg
I just returned to Brandon and learned of Hilt's death. I wish to add my sincere wishes to those already received. I remember him as a member of a great team of administrators for the Brandon School Division and as one who treated the local news media with respect and appreciation. After my time with the division, I got to know him as a friend and as a person I took delight in meeting now and again and sharing a joke and a laugh or two. I will never forget doing my last radio call-in show when his familiar voice came on the line to wish me well in my retirement. I still have a recording of that brief conversation. I will not soon forget the courage it must have taken for him to make that call. Anyone who knew Hilt was the better for it. I know I was.

I wouldn't have chosen the career I did if it wasn't for "uncle" Hilt. At a time where I had dabbled in a few things and never found my way, it was Hilt who suggested my personality suited teaching. Twenty fours years later I'm still teaching. Hilt was a kind and caring individual who will surely be missed. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.
