Sheila, David and family,
I have many good memories of times spent at your home during my growing up years. I recall your Mother's laugh, her being able to be quite strict when necessary :) and of course how you had those nice hand knit sweaters and skirts that she had made for you Sheila. How wonderful that you have been able to have her in your lives for so long! My thoughts and prayers as you.

Dear Sheila, Reg and family, Craig, Heidi and boys,
Thinking of you at this time on the loss of your Mom and Nana. Knowing how trying it is to watch a loved one go through memory loss, but, also remembering our special "war bride" moms and all the good memories we had with them. Heartfelt sympathy to all.

The relationship between the Carters and the Maguires goes back to when Ray and Dad were school chums. They both served overseas not knowing that experience would change their lives. They both married English war brides and brought them to Canada. My mom Peggy got passage to Canada in January of 1946. For a few months prior to getting on the farm that spring, Ray and Pat and Gordon and Peggy lived together in a house in Elgin. Peggy often chuckled at her memories of those times together. I can only imagine! From those times, our families were knit together celebrating Christmases, New Years, birthdays and anniversaries together. We had fun. A frequent memory Mom always shared with respect to Pat''s gift as a seamstress is rooted in a trip to Clear Lake for the two couples. Pat needed a new sun outfit, spied the floral drapes in the living room and voila! A wonderful pantaloon and halter top - we have the picture as proof! Finally, our 2 mothers were soul mates. They spent many times, happy and not so happy over a pot of tea in each other's kitchen. They braved their lives as farmwives together through thick and thin, canning peaches without sealer rings, baking lemon pies totally in the over, and learning how to drive in a ModelA and an old Plymouth in a summer fallow field, once Ray and Gordon had shown them the gears.
When I think of Pat, I think of great bursts of laughter, great family times, her grit and determination and her constant, principled love for her family and friends.
We are thinking of all of you in this loss. Jeff Carter

I have many memories of my Grandma, but my favourite one was before my cousin Mitchell's wedding in 2008. At the time she was struggling with her memory and the subsequent lose of independence it was causing. Together her and I drove up to Pelican Lake together. I got to share with her that my wife was expecting our first child, and for two hours we openly talked about our views about all of life's ups and downs. She shared with me some aspects of her childhood that I was interested in, as well as her feelings toward losing independence. She was a fearlessly independent women who truly set the tone for her 4 fearlessly independent daughters. I will cherish my memories of my dear Grandma, and truly miss her presence. My daughters will miss their bi-yearly walks with their Great Grandma. -SM

Amazing pictures of Auntie Pat!! She loved to smile and she loved to laugh so It's no surprise that her family continue to exhibit those lovely traits. She stayed in Victoria a number of times and we always got together with her, sometimes with other members of her family and sometimes with that other crazy war bride from London. The fact that Pat stayed in Canada and grew into her adult self on a farm in South West Manitoba shows how strong and determined she was to live her life well.
I always looked forward to Auntie Pat's visits and she will be missed.
Auntie Pat, May you find all the great places to walk in your new journey.
