My sincere condolences to the Chernos Family for the loss of their Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather.
I knew and had the pleasure of working with and learning from "Chief Chernos" during the mid sixties, while he was the Police Chief in Rivers and I was a young member of the Provost Corps, posted at CJATC Rivers. A true Gentleman, whose lessons in fairness for all, I've never forgotten.

To the Chernos family. Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of your father. He was just a few months older than me. I will always remember your dad as a schoolmate, a neighbor, a friend and the best policeman Rivers has ever had. Sincerely, Don McFadden.

Walter was from a Pioneer River's family who settled in the town almost 110 years ago. He was one of 9 brothers who grew up in the house his Father built in the early 1900's. His love of hunting, fishing and outdoor sports, started when he was young. There was always a hunting rifle handy behind the kitchen door. The brothers would spend time during their youth hunting and fishing around Rivers. He also played baseball and hockey when he was young and later worked on the executive with minor hockey in the province.
.
He was too young to serve in the Second World War, like his older brothers. Instead he served his community - keeping everyone safe and secure. It was more than a job for him - it was a calling. He policed the community with honesty, decency, honor, and dignity. He set a very high standard of performance in his devotion and dedication to his job.
Sending much love and thoughts to Barry, Diane, Beverly, and their Families. You will be dearly missed Uncle Walter.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Walter Chernos. I was honored to have known Walter through The Rivers Police Department where I worked for 15yrs. Walter's wisdom, knowledge and passion for the job was passed onto Mike Turnbull who in turn passed it into myself. Walter will forever be remembered as the foundation of the Rivers Police Department, as well as "Chief" RIP Sir, you are reunited with Billie.

My most sincere condolences from my family to yours. I remember Walter with fondness. I worked at the library when it was still in the town office building and remember Walter coming in through the back door, very quietly, then yelling out my name in that voice only he had. Lol. He caught me by surprise every time! As I was a single mother of four, he was a blessing when it came to keeping my girls on the straight and narrow.. He will be missed.
