My belated condolences to Bert's family.
Bert and I worked together at CJF/FM 96 in Montreal in the late 1970s. It was my first job in broadcasting and I was quite nervous, but then I met Bert. The most important thing I came away with from my friendship with Bert was "Don't sweat the little stuff."
He took me under his wing as a friend and was both a big brother and friend to me.
My best memory of Bert is when I had to produce a commercial for a haunted house magazine shop. Bert suggested several ways of processing his voice and recommended we use the song "Tubular Bells," running in reverse, as the music bed.
It was a wonderful production breakthrough. I was learning to experiment. and Bert was on a roll because we had the time to "play radio" in the production studio.
Bert's ideas were all strong and made this 60 second commercial sound like a beautifully conceived, frightening commercial that gave the advertiser an image.
Unfortunately the client didn't see it that way. "Too scary," he said. When Bert and I found out we laughed until we dropped. The commercial never made it to air, but darn, we had a great time
The last time I saw Bert was around 1978. As I left the studio he was dancing around and singing with the O'Jays. The song was "Funky Weekend." The song always reminded me of Bert.
He was a good man. A decent man. A kind man.
I have looked for my friend online over the years without success. It is in this context that I found this page. It was not what I wanted to see. But I am comforted by the the thought that Bert is in good hands, likely dancing and singing that song.
Rest well my good friend.
Howard

Marnie,
It was always a pleasure to come over to your home and spend some time with you and Bert. We always enjoyed listening to the flying stories and Bert and Larry had a bond with the great interest in flying. We feel your loss.
Our favorite poem is HIGH FLIGHT by John Gillespie Magee Jr. and is as follows:
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up , up the long, delirious blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew-
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
The poem was a favorite amongst pilots because it captures the essence of freedom and reverence of flight and God. We feel that Bert also shared the same feelings with his love of flying. He will truly be missed.
Sincerely,
Candice Lawson and Larry Legrange

RIP Bert Gordon, ex-CFOX, CFMI, CKNW
Dave Chesney posted the sad news on his Facebook page this morning .. that his Vancouver radio buddy from 30 years ago, Bert Gordon had passed away in Manitoba. He would have celebrated his 71st birthday in two weeks.
The Vancouver Broadcasters website reminds us that Bert worked at CFOX in the early 80's, then CFMI about 1983. Bert was heard weekends, then all-nights at CKNW. In the late 1980's he was heard on STAR-FM Chilliwack. Later on, about 2000, Bert was the morning host at CFST Winnipeg.
Chesney posts that he passed away peacefully this morning at 6:42 a.m. At his request there will be no service and his ashes will be placed in the Fowell family plot at the Minnewawa Cemetery near Nesbitt Manitoba where he grew up.
He was forever thankful that he was adopted by the Fowells (Gordon & Verda) in Nesbitt Manitoba as a young boy and had a wonderful life growing up on the farm. The family will be writing a story soon that best describes his life adventures to be published in the Brandon Sun and the Winnipeg Free Press.
Chesney remembers that he and Bert were part of the C-FOX 'Oilers.' That will mean something I'm sure to The Fox listeners from that era.
Brockie-Donovan (Brandon) is in charge of interment arrangements.

Sorry to hear of Bert's passing. I remember Bert taking extra time at Star-FM (original in Chilliwack) to teach me some productions basics.
His voice still stands out as smooth and convincing. We've lost a great radio man. A true class act.

A 'true blue' radio guy and a great teammate. Lots of fun to work with. Bert always had a positive attitude and that helped him through some tough medical issues in later years. We'll miss him.

I will always remember going into the control room one day in the 80's when Burt was on the air, he had turntable # 1 on the air and a memo from the "memo board" fell off from the draft that was created from the door opening. The memo board was next to the door and # 1 turntable was right below it. Well, if the memo didn't land right on that table, we both looked at each other and thought what now. The LP didn't skip a bit and should have been a total disaster. this went on for 10 or 15 seconds and finally I reached down and got the memo of, still no skip We both looked at each and said Wow that was close.
Sorry we fell out of touch over the years,

I was just starting my career at CHUM Winnipeg, when I had the privilege to work with Bert, he was a legend, but you would never know it because he was so humble about it. His love for our medium was unparalleled. I'll never forget the time he was in the hospital, and came back to do his morning show (1290 Starlight CFST) with the IV still attached, and a cigar in his mouth. They don't make them like that anymore, and that makes me sad. All the stories he shared with us youngling's made us howl. Like his listeners, we hung on every word. RIP Commissioner

I am so proud and happy that Bert was able to re-connect with his sister Glady.
For any difficulties in their younger days, these later days made up for them.
Why?
Because Buck is a champ.
And as sister Glady sees these next years, she will be safe & sound because Buck is the right kind of guy, and family is family, and you do make us all proud.

I sat to write something for all. But I could only focus on Bert's son Trevor.
There is a 4k limit on what I did say to Trevor, so certain passages, here, are redacted.
Dear Mr. Trevor
I have lost my brother-in-law.
You have lost your Father.
It is time to reflect, and savour the good, forget the bad, and honour this man.
I was a precocious pre-teen when my sister Marnie started dating some new guy named Bert. Up until then, it had been a perturbing parade of dweebs and clowns; a new one every few months. Such is teen life.
Enter Bert.
This guy was different.
He tended to show up on time, was always well -dressed and had a sense of humour. I am not gay, but it was obvious, this guy was strikingly handsome. Girls like that. Go figure. However, most striking, for me, was that he treated me as an adult.
He got my Seal Of Approval. (longer 'why&how' redacted)
Bert coached me to some important issues, and I looked up to him. He Earned my respect, in so many ways.
My sister's got a really cool boyfriend!
I was all excited and told everybody.
He's on the radio !!!
Herb Fowell had an alias for radio "Bert Gordon". This likely (further) appealed to me, as it coincided with Spiderman#1 or the earlier [not-so-ultimate] Amazing Fantasy, where a normal teen-ager, with normal teen-age problems, Peter Parker also had an alter-ego: Spider[-]man.
The happy pair would often come back after a date, and would retire to the family living room. I was told to "leave them alone" .. or to .. "get lost" ..or to.. "scram" .. etc. I would comply deviously .. for a while .. but would then burst in on them, trying to catch them 'necking'.
Why that seemed 'the thing to do' .. I don't know. But one night I demanded "25cents to go away". And we came to a mutually beneficial arrangement. On occasion, I might get paid in advance. Excellent. I might sooner afford to mail away for the huge (3' x 4'?) Spiderman poster from Marvel. And I was able to buy all the Lik-M-Aid (powdered SweeTarts), Pixie Stix and other crap I could stomach.
As we all learn - things change. Marnie was crying and inconsolable for a week or more, and Bert wasn't coming around anymore. What was going on? I eventually learned that some (evil!) malicious gossip had convinced her to cut it off.
My new big pal was gone.
Bert went on, from that bitter injustice, picked himself up, and went forward, to earn many successes. He persevered.
Life went on.
Marnie married someone else. Bert married your mom.
Years later, Bert and Marnie got back together again.
Trevor - from your viewpoint - I certainly do not envy your extreme disappointment that he left when he did.
You do know and we do know that he loved you, as only a father can love his son.
From my viewpoint, I can assure you that Marnie did love him, way back when, and I know she loved him still, when they resolved the old lies, and I can also assure you that Bert was loved, and cared for, every day since they got back together.
Again, from my viewpoint: this was for Love, and for my sister. Up to that point, her marriage had turned .. different.
Love is better .. for my sister .. for anyone.
I do hope you understand.
Bert came back to give Marnie a new brighter chapter - a much happier LIFE.
So, upon my first next meeting with Bert, cca.2001, I would demand 24cents, again.
I am no longer much of a fan of Spiderman. I do wish I had those old first-issue mags, though.
You could help me fetch top dollar.
Be patient.
Be proud.
Persevere, Sir.
We will miss him. We will remember him.
Sincerely,
John Donovan

Dear Heart:
We went around the world over several years with other people with absolutely no regrets. Then we came back in life and cherished our last existence together. There wasn't a day we didn't say I love you, not one....even in the ICU when you were finally a little with it....the physiotherapist actually thought you were saying that to her but your eyes were on me and she realized....oh, that was meant for you. She and I had a "moment".
Daily, we shared big hugs, gave each other a smile, shared a thought, good or bad and had those long chats about stuff...big and small, loved our collective children unconditionally and helped them out when they needed us.
Miss the phone calls from your "Man Cave" and sound studio on our intercom telephones. These phones were gifts from nephew Rick (RIP), niece Carman, grand-nephew Nathan (who shares the same birth date as you, July 27th....don't forget to send him a B-Day message...no thunder & lightning please!), but if you are too busy in your new studio I will do the honors!, ... and grand-niece Nicole who is starting university this fall at University of Manitoba!!!. Psychology...who knew! We promised Sunday dinners here with Bert Burgers and that still stands - good thing he leaked his recipe to me!! Yikes!
By the way, Nicole, you are taller than your Uncle Bert so you will now be my go to person to change those darn halogen lights in the kitchen! He had long arms but yours are longer!
Thank the Gods!
Bless you my Love.
Thanks everyone for your kind words.

I will always cherish the memories I shared with Uncle Bert. One special memory was when our family gathered together for Christmas at my home with a very special guest. Uncle Bert and Auntie Marnie brought Verda, Bert's Mom out in the snow... Wheelchair and all! It was wonderful to watch her face light up with the kids all around. Even Rick was there! The whole family!
I will miss our talks and hearing your beautiful voice, love you forever Uncle Bert...until we meet again xx

Trevor's love of airplanes and music came from his father. They would spend hours together building models and went to the Abbotsford airshow. Trevor and his wife recently moved and had to downsize. Trevor could not part with his father's old books on airplanes. With his father's help Trevor opened a comic book toy store. He has a framed copy of a valuable old comic that he refuses to sell because it was his dad's.
When Trevor was a baby in his jolly jumper Bert would play music and they would jump together to the beat. Trevor later had his own internet radio show and his dad helped him with mikes and mixing boards.
Bert was very talented and his skills learned on the farm were very useful when designing and building our home.
Bert loved to tease and pull jokes on people. One time he was filling in on a hot August night (promoting the album of the same name) and even convinced the people who had worked at the radio station for years that there was a pool on the roof of the building. Encouraging them to come down to the station to use it. Bert was gifted at spinning yarns
One of the most important events in his life (other than the birth of his son) was finding and connecting with his sister and her family.
Pictures are included but may be fuzzy I am not sure if they chopped off the top. It was hard to choose from so many pictures and stories.
