My condolences to Peggy and family on Alex's passing. From the first day I met him back in the 70's when he was playing a quirky piece on his pipes (much to the dismay of some other pipers I must add) to the last time at Rotary he always had a smile and a kind word. The world has lost a true gem. Kathryn Anne Henry

To the Matheson family., you are in my thoughts and prayers.
It is with sadness I learned of the passing of our dear Beare family friend Alex whom we first met in the 70,s in Shilo Mb and are friends to this day. We shared laughs, dinners, practical jokes and the friendship of a family so unique. Our little girls loved Alex painting their knees (even at Vals' wedding) to following him down Sapper Avenue as he played his pipes. Alex was born on April fools day and won us over with his wit, wisdom, charm and knowledge. May you rest in peace dear Alex .

I will always remember the Colonel's kindness to us in 26th FD RCA, his playing of "Turkey In The Straw" on the pipes, and his masterful painting of HMCS Brandon cresting waves of wheat in the picture he did for presentation at the ship's commissioning in June of 1999.

Dearest Peggy, and All the Mathesons,
Sending my sincere condolences as I hear of the passing of Uncle Alex. Though hard to measure, the amount of joy he brought so many can be felt in these tributes to him. One of my many memories---In Shilo, when I was laid up with chicken pox, he painted a sign for me, a little duck, waving a flag that said "yay Jennifer", and captioned it "Get well quick, Chick!" What an incredible gift, to be able to make a kid feel so special. I treasure that sign to this day. His artistic gifts in my parental home range from witty caricature, to gorgeous watercolours accompanied by poetry about the prairies. He inspired me to try my hand at calligraphy, after seeing his beautiful script......These memories are all connected to the wonderful Beare/Matheson friendships. Thanks to him, I know that a rusty nail is not just something you find in the garage, and the leftover whipped cream is delightful in a cup of coffee. I am thinking of him, and all of you with love,
Jenn Beare

Peggy, Dan, Bruce,Murray, Gordon, and families,
So many fond memories of our time in Shilo with Colonel Alec next door. Piping down Sapper Avenue, faces on the knees of many, great caricatures of family and friends. Colonel Matheson was key in improving my public speaking and getting me to "Annunciate"! His positive spirit, boundless energy and constant smile are an inspiration to this day. An exceptional leader who managed to command CFB Shilo as an Armoured Corps officer - a feat not matched to this day.
I learned to better appreciate tennis and basketball through his love of the games. He had a full life with a wonderful family as his legacy. Our thoughts will be with you all as you say good-bye on Saturday. So many expressions, including ... love a duck. The Beare family was so fortunate to cross paths with him. He will be missed.
Murray, Leslie, Graeme and Craig Beare.

We are thinking of Peggy and her boys at this time. It is with great fondness that I reflect fond memories of Alex, from a young girl in Shilo, MB to his important role at my wedding ceremony. Curtis and I so appreciate his willingness to 'pipe us in' to our reception, his quippy, spur of the moment song to prompt a kiss and his final drawing on my knee, displayed at the removal of my garter. Alex alway shared his smile and great hugs and I still get a warm feeling thinking of him.

Peggy and family,
We are all thinking of you and have nothing but wonderful, fond memories of "Uncle" Alex and his amazing friendship and talents. From drawing on our knees when we little, teaching my children the Loonie song while visiting in Wainwright, and heading up the teen youth group at church in Shilo. We are so lucky to have known Alex, and mum and dad's guest book have many wonderful drawings from him from the times you visited. We all got caricatures from him at sometime in our lives, and have always cherished these! He was an amazing person who made everyone smile.
Our sincere condolences,
Deb Beare, Kristin, Cameron, and Steven

Peggy and family:
I was deeply saddened to learn of Alex's passing. I've never known an individual who could light up a day or elicit a smile as well as him. A wonderful sense of humor, a quick wit and a man of many stories, he never failed to entertain or to brighten a day for anyone who met him. He will be remembered for many reasons including his many contributions to the city of Brandon. my wish for you is that time will be the great healer. Time cannot erase the beautiful memories we all hold of Alex. But it can ease the pain of his passing. My most sincere condolences.
Brian Marshall,
Saanichton, BC.

Dear Peggy and Family - I am so very sad to read of Alex's passing. Man, he was such a warm, special guy and I was so fortunate to meet him when I worked at ACC. His hardy laugh, his joy of life and the love he had for his family...especially you, Dear Peg! His illustrations...he was so excited about his latest works. And whenever I would run into you both...it was ALWAYS a great visit! He was a great man and will be so terribly missed. Love to you all at this sad time!

Dear Aunt Peg and Family
I have many Mitchell/Matheson memories: Visits in Barrie, Borden, Oromocto, Gagetown, and camping at Craigleith. Behind all the fun would be Uncle Alex with boundless energy and frequent stunts and pranks: a cookie taken from my plate when I wasn't looking or an olive at the bottom of my glass of milk; loudly entertaining us and neighbors with his rendition of Yogi Bear in the middle of Springwater Park; stories that he would read to us - who can forget the Monkey's Paw? Piping in the head table at our weddings, and of course there's the one armed fiddler! I still have many of his Christmas cards and his version of a letter with sketches of family activities on a large scroll sent to my Mom and Dad from Oromocto in 1963.
When it comes to demonstrating a zest for life, he set the bar high.
My warmest regards to all
David Mitchell

Peggy & family,
How saddened I was to learn of Alex's passing.
I first met him in Petawawa early 60s when he was with the Army Tactics & Organization Board.& I was the Operations Officer with the 8th Hussars.
Alex was a fine Scotsman who played the pipes on many occasions. He was a leader in providing his knowledge & experience on field operations. His great wit & character made him to be a wonderful gentleman to be around.
He will be fondly missed.
Please accept my deep condolences to you & your family.
Best regards,
Dave Henderson

Peggy and family, thinking of you as you mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Alex holds a special place in our hearts, as do you Peggy. You were terrific neighbors to us on Hazelwood Crescent! So many wonderful memories were made on our back deck or yours. Many a celebration was held with the two of you. Alex's wit and charm will truly be missed. Share all the wonderful memories he made with each and everyone of you. Thinking of you...Larry, Mel, Kiya, Bryer, Kynesha, Wyllow and families.
