What would still remain of me?
The ghost within your eyes,
The whisper in your sighs.

Believe.

My father was more than the sum of his life stories, but all I have left are those stories that are scattered like puzzle pieces. When I find a story, it's as if I have found another piece of him to hold to my heart. If someone has a story about him, please share it. I know he was not a perfect person, but there is both beauty and humanity in the imperfect.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

Remembering my father, not by who he was but by how he lived, and by how he gave me that same gift of freedom to live my life on my own terms:
my father moved through dooms of love
through sames of am through haves of give,
singing each morning out of each night
my father moved through depths of height
this motionless forgetful where
turned at his glance to shining here;
that if (so timid air is firm)
under his eyes would stir and squirm
newly as from unburied which
floats the first who, his april touch
drove sleeping selves to swarm their fates
woke dreamers to their ghostly roots
and should some why completely weep
my father's fingers brought her sleep:
vainly no smallest voice might cry
for he could feel the mountains grow.
Lifting the valleys of the sea
my father moved through griefs of joy;
praising a forehead called the moon
singing desire into begin
joy was his song and joy so pure
a heart of star by him could steer
and pure so now and now so yes
the wrists of twilight would rejoice
keen as midsummer's keen beyond
conceiving mind of sun will stand,
so strictly (over utmost him
so hugely) stood my father's dream
his flesh was flesh his blood was blood:
no hungry man but wished him food;
no cripple wouldn't creep one mile
uphill to only see him smile.
Scorning the Pomp of must and shall
my father moved through dooms of feel;
his anger was as right as rain
his pity was as green as grain
septembering arms of year extend
less humbly wealth to foe and friend
than he to foolish and to wise
offered immeasurable is
proudly and (by octobering flame
beckoned) as earth will downward climb,
so naked for immortal work
his shoulders marched against the dark
his sorrow was as true as bread:
no liar looked him in the head;
if every friend became his foe
he'd laugh and build a world with snow.
My father moved through theys of we,
singing each new leaf out of each tree
(and every child was sure that spring
danced when she heard my father sing)
then let men kill which cannot share,
let blood and flesh be mud and mire,
scheming imagine, passion willed,
freedom a drug that's bought and sold
giving to steal and cruel kind,
a heart to fear, to doubt a mind,
to differ a disease of same,
conform the pinnacle of am
though dull were all we taste as bright,
bitter all utterly things sweet,
maggoty minus and dumb death
all we inherit, all bequeath
and nothing quite so least as truth
—i say though hate were why men breathe—
because my Father lived his soul
love is the whole and more than all

Our family lived in Brandon for 8 years (from 1975) when I was a family physician in The Brandon Clinic and for much of my time I considered myself to be very fortunate to be able to call on Robert's help whenever necessary. His neurological skills were second to none in my experience - not only was he ever willing, no matter what time of day or night, no matter how minor or major the problem, to come and assess and advise; and he was ever ready to share his tremendous knowledge with his medical colleagues - it was nothing but a joy to see him at work and to learn from his vast neurological reservoir of knowledge.
The people and physicians of Brandon and environs have indeed been fortunate to have had such a great man and clinician to assist with their health care- his is a great and sad loss, and I extend my sincerest condolences to Mrs Tang-Wai and her family at this time.

He has found a special place in my heart and he will never be forgotten.

My heartfelt condolences are extended to the Tang-Wai Family. I worked with your husband, your father, and got to know the man to a degree. He loved and adored his wife, and children and was very proud of them. I do not believe the flower shop will be the same.
The gentleness of heart shone through every pore when TW spoke of his Family. Ah, His love and passion of neurology benefited many. He shared the knowledge and wisdom he had gained freely to those willing to listen. And his infamous words "what is the one thing you need to give you the answer here Sylvia". The key in your pocket Dr. TW I believe opens all the doors. Right! He would say, and out he would pull his infamous ordinary key and proceed to doing what he did best, being one of the best clinicians in the field of neurology.
Thank you for all the awesome memories that remain our hearts, for Dr. TW, you definitely were one of a kind, special and unique in so many ways. RIP Dr. TW you've earned your wings to fly and soar.

To the Tang-Wai family,
Please accept our sympathies and condolences on the passing of your husband and father. His eternal willingness to share his spectacular knowledge to help my patients was always appreciated.
Our esteemed colleague Dr. Robert Tang-Wai was a dedicated, conscientious, exceptional neurologist and a pillar of our medical community. With the unwavering support of Eileen he provided care to thousands of patients in Brandon and Western Manitoba and outstanding advice to hundreds of his colleagues for more than three and one half decades. In addition, Bob and Eileen raised the four of you who have all been successful in your chosen fields.
He grew up in Mauritius, went to medical school in Ireland and did his specialty training in Ottawa before choosing to settle, raise your family and practice in Brandon. He was a medical pioneer in Neurology in Westman. He was Brandon's first neurologist. He established the department of Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG) at the Brandon Regional Health Centre and provided Electromyography and Nerve Conduction studies for the first time outside Winnipeg.
He always worked hard to keep up to date in his chosen field of expertise, he always provided high quality medical care and essentially worked until the time of his passing. His contributions to Brandon and Westman were exemplary. It is people like Bob whose contributions to the quality of life in our community make it such a special place to live and raise our families. He will be missed and you should be proud of the contributions he made during his career.
He left this place in better shape than when he arrived.

Dear Mrs. Tang-Wai and Family
I am deeply saddened by Robert's passing.
We certainly have lost a remarkable Giant in Neurology. I learned so much from him. His way of simplifying complex Neurological cases always amazed me. He was so experienced and knowledgeable. I am so happy I was able to tell him these things in person.
His willingness to work late hours and to share the on call schedule with me to cover Neurological services in Brandon always impressed me and made me admire him even more.
I will not only miss discussing difficult cases with Robert, but also will miss him as a person always eager to talk about everything. I really enjoyed talking about "Vegas" with him, That topic made him smile so much.
Without a doubt we have been lucky to have had him with us in Brandon. Where he decided to dedicate his life. Rest in Peace Robert.

Dr. Robert Tang Wai: We were shocked and very sad to hear of the sudden death of our colleague, Dr. Robert Tang-Wai, Rest in Peace. He was a great clinician. He helped so many people over the years. Many people are so thankful to him for his expertise and sound medical advice. Over the years when I had to spend a lot of time at the hospital, I would meet him and we would talk about the latest news from Galway University, remembering fondly our professors and fellow graduates from our at days at University College Galway, e.g. where they were at and where are they now. Anecdotal stories were exchanged. We both graduated from University College Galway, Ireland, though Dr. Tang-Wai a few years ahead of me. University was fun, then, we both agreed. How times have changed!! We had fun, we had great dedicated professors who upheld the Hippocratic Oath. They were kind, knowledgeable, practical, dedicated- for the most part. We both agree that we had fond memories of our days at University College Galway. My sympathy to your dear wife, Leong Mi, and your daughter, Karen, and sons, Robert, Peter and Raymond. Again, our sincere sympathy to the family. You were always so helpful to me when I needed advice, direction or help. You were the best, Dr. Tang-Wai. R.I.P. Dr. Mary Egan.
