We are saddened to learn of Don's recent passing and express our sincere sympathy to his family. Our daughter, Kerstin, who has Down's Syndrome, worked for several years with Don and others at Candlewood Books. We are very grateful that she had that opportunity for work.
He will be missed a lot by all of you for sure. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Sorry we were not able to attend the funeral as we were out of town at that time.

To the Phillips & Kelleher families, my sincerest condolences on the loss of your brother, uncle and friend. Don and I connected in high school days with lots of heart warming, laughter type memories created there. My fondest are of Don, Carol(Robson) & myself walking downtown & around after school talking about a variety of life issues. I moved away and returned to find Don at Candlewood, and our "talks" resumed once again until I once again moved away. Our last "talk" was a chance meeting while he was walking with his dog. I have nothing but heart filled memories of Don. He was unique in so many great ways plus kind, generous, gentle and had this wondrous leprechaun that loved to pop out. I will miss this man yet so happy that we connected and re-connected so many times in our life. It's given me beautiful memories which I treasure, my "pot of gold". I left the best to the last- your (oops) Don's smile-indescribable. It always brightened my day. Thanks Don. I am unable to make the funeral which I am truly saddened by. Good Bye, True Friend. Very sad to hear of Don's passing. Don was a client of mine in the 1990s. I kept his computers running, and in return he introduced me to a world of music, literature and strong coffee that I'd not otherwise have known. Thanks, Don.

Don was a great person. I bought many books from him over the years. We had a lot of interesting conversations, mostly about music. I remember hanging out at the store during and after hours in the back just taking about stuff with the other characters who would come by to visit. Don will be missed by many.

Don was a very generous boss; when one of his employees broke his leg he took me on temporarily to fill in. I ended up staying the better part of 4 years, and as a result, finished school with no student loan debt. He taught me so much about music and books, and whenever the talk has turned to jobs in the years since, I always say that working at Candlewood was the best job I ever had. I still have the books he gave me when I moved on in 1988. I left Brandon for Edmonton that year and was a little scared. Don reassured me with this advice: "find a place to live near Whyte Ave, there's a great bookstore there- Greenwoods". So I did. Don was an important influence on me and I am very sorry to hear he's gone. My sincere condolences to his family. Kate Bridgett, Edmonton.

I hadn't seen Don in years as my visits to Brandon over the past decade have been sporadic and brief. But every time I returned, there was a twinge when I realized I couldn't drop by Candlewood for a chat and a Saskaberry with Don.
I had the good fortune to work for Don during a pivotal stretch in my youth and he challenged and enlightened me intellectually and musically in a way that has stuck with me for the nearly two decades since. His passion was rooted in kindness and the expectations and responsibility he placed on his employees was rooted in respect and belief in our best.
I carry so much of him with me, and my personal library contains so many titles I purchased while in his employ. I'm reminded of the nickname he gave me daily, as I made it my email, Twitter handle and other online monikers, and he will always have a place in my head and heart.
Rest in peace, Don. You were a great man.

Don was the single greatest influence on my young literary and musical life. The last section of books, by the door to the office, expanded my mind long before I had the pleasure of working at Candlewood. Once there, Don's vast and rambling music collection expanded my musical tastes in ways that are still felt today. I loved working at Candlewood and Don was the best. So generous and kind. He put way too much faith in my bookkeeping abilities, which made me work that much harder just to prove him right. I always enjoyed visiting after I had moved on, or running into Don around town. Although it has been a couple of years since we bumped into each other, I still thought of him often and will miss him.

Don was a generous supporter of Mosaic Massey during the years it operated
at Vincent Massey High School. In more recent years I have enjoyed watching him
walking his dog in the neighbourhood. His bookstore was a fascinating place for
browsing and his knowledge was inspiring. He will truly be missed.

I first met Don in grade 9 at BCI. We became friends with Our love of music .
We spent many hours listening music in the basement always new and interesting artists and on Vinyl . Don always had love of music from different artists not always the mainstream and I still listen to some of those today he had a great taste in music.
My wife Phyllis also met Don at BCI and in later years worked for Don for four years at Candlewood she always admired his knowledge of literature and his store was veer unique in Brandon
We will miss you Don

Don was brilliant, funny and giving.
I worked for him for many years at the store, and we spent a lot of late nights listening to his vast CD collection, talking and drinking coffee that can only be described as "thick". He taught me a lot about music and literature, and introduced me to lots of bands and authors I still enjoy today. He was a boss, a friend and a mentor to me and others, and he gave generously to charities, his church and groups he supported. Candlewood Books was a haven, especially for that ragtag group of misfits he employed, each of whom were assigned a nickname. Don remained friends with many of his former staff, and is still loved and respected by them. We will miss him a lot.
May the road rise with you, Mr. Phillips.
