Obituary of Laura Elaine Gara

GARA: Laura Elaine, June 6, 1926 - October 27, 2014. It is with sadness the family of Laura Elaine Gara announce her sudden and peaceful passing at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, October 27, 2014 at the age of 88 years. For 25 years, she accommodated people with mental health issues, alcohol and drug addictions, offering living quarters at her revenue homes. She worked closely with the Mental Health Centre, Social Services and enjoyed helping so many young people get a new start in life. For 18 years, she was an employee at Woolworth's store as supervisor of the bakery department. From there, she went to Canada Safeway as head supervisor and cake decorator in bakery sales for 15 years. After retirement, she decided to get a part time job as an Avon representative. This career lasted well into her eighties. In her early years, she was a Legion member and active in the women's auxiliary. She also attended the Prime Time Club at Fairview Home a couple times a week for the past ten years. We commend all the excellent staff for their kindness, support and the tender loving care given to each one that attended this program. She is survived by her sister Joyce (Lavern), brother Ken (Kay), daughters Joan, Gene (Dave), Irene, daughter-in-law Jean Hunter, granddaughters April (Darren), Tracy, Sharlene, Lara (Brad), grandsons Shane (Meredith), Shawn (Neriza), Cole (Ashley), great-grandchildren Kerisa, Cortney, Travis, Darian, Katelynn, Kayleen, Brodee, Hayden, Sawyer, Liam and Lucas. She was predeceased by her sister Marion Scott, brothers Mervin Smith, Glen Usher and son Bobby Hunter. In keeping with Laura's wishes, cremation will take place and a Memorial Reception Service to honour Laura's life will be held at the George Brockie Fellowship Centre (Brockie Donovan Funeral Home) 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, "Cancer Services," 150 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
