Doug was my father's best friend and I knew him for most of my life. He was a kind, soft spoken and honest man. He took pleasure in the small things in life and valued time spent with friends and family. For many years he grew a plentiful garden and shared his produce with us and probably many others. Both my family and I enjoyed many delicious pies baked with the rhubarb from " Doug's place".
Doug, with his smile and friendly manner had a way of making people feel comfortable and welcome. When I was a youngster he and Ann and my parents would sometimes visit back and forth. He was always nice to my brothers and me if we were present.
My father and Doug had different hobbies but they often got together after work or Sunday afternoons for a few drinks and good humoured conversation. They would take the odd trip together to Vegas or to ghost towns in Doug's old stomping grounds. In their last years they called each other every day to check up on one another until my father passed away in 2013.
