Darren had a gift for improving anyone's day. He was always genuinely interested in hearing others' thoughts on just about any subject, and gave validation to them. He never seemed to contradict or knock down an idea. And he always had time to visit and drink coffee. His distinctive laugh was infectious and always seemed to encourage me to attempt to be funny. The first time I remember making him laugh was at the Valley, I was probably about 7 or 8. I'd found an egg under the water by the culvert at the slough known as "the grade". I was convinced I'd found a fossilized egg and was quite excited. I flagged Darren down who was at that time a teenager. He stopped the tractor, (I think he was cutting hay). He listened to my story with a big smile, and asked how I knew it was fossilized. I said it was because it was so hard, it must be a fossil. Look! I said, squeezing the egg as hard as I could. I can still feel the shock registering on my face and hear his laughter as the egg exploded in my face. The same laugh I have heard many times since. A laugh I will miss.

Janet, Doris, Danica and families - my deepest sympathy to all of you. Darren was a good friend growing up in Erickson. I have fond memories of those times and am grateful Darren and I were able to relive some of those memories when I visited him in the hospital last month - playing hockey together in the early years (he was very talented I was not), later on working on our cars - installing stereos, listening to tunes, going to parties, etc. Darren will be missed by many as I am sure you well know.

To Janet and the Gusdal family. I am deeply sadden to hear the passing of Darren. As a former teacher at Linden Lanes School, the highlight of the school year was our annual June camp at Wannacumbac. I will always remember Darren's smile and warm chuckle when we arrived at the Mess Hall. Whether it was pouring with rain or sweltering hot, we loved the coziness and friendships developed at Wannacumbac. Darren's vision and cordial nature was always a part of the camp experience. When I meet former students, their favourite memory is always about their time at Wannacumbac. Though I am now retired and living 3000 km away, I still have my Wannacumbac Camp Book. Darren was always there to make life a little better and I find it hard to believe that he is gone. He will be sorely missed by all the lives that he has touched: teachers, parents, students and staff. It was an honour to know the man.
