Obituary of Marjorie Elizabeth Sheardown

SHEARDOWN: Marjorie Elizabeth passed away at the Assiniboine Centre of the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the age of 92. Marj was born on November 11, 1921 to Jack and Ada Mackie near Bradwardine, Manitoba. She will be lovingly missed by her four children, Doug (Wallianna), grandsons Gerald and Christopher (Judith); Reg, grandchildren Brent and Jana (Mike) McMurray, great grandson Reid and their mother Gaye; Georgia (Dave) Hanwell, granddaughters Cecilie, Alicia and Brenna (Daniel) DeAngelis; Shari Maguire, granddaughter Jennifer and her father Darren. She will also be missed by sister-in-law, Jean Mackie, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ed, in 2010 and her daughter, Kay, in 2013; her parents, John Alexander and Ada Margaret (McTaggart) Mackie ; brothers, Clarence and Red Mackie and sisters-in law, Tena, Marie, Eleanor, Net, Doreen and brother-in-law, Jack Sheardown. She started working with the Manitoba Telephone Service in Oak River, Manitoba as a telephone operator. When Mom and Dad married in Hamilton, Ontario, on May 30, 1942, Dad had just joined the army preparing to go overseas for World War II. Mom moved back to Winnipeg when Dad went to England and worked at McDonald Air Force Base making rudders, gas lines and other parts for airplanes. When Dad returned from the war, they purchased a house in Hamiota, Manitoba where they started raising their family. Doug, Reg and Kay were all born in Hamiota. They moved to Brandon in the fall of 1953 and Georgia was born the next spring on a visit to Hamiota for Easter. They completed their family with the birth of Shari in Brandon in 1961. Mom was an avid bowler, played bingo at the Forresters Hall for many years and monitored all events of the five children whether it was cubs, scouts, explorers, brownies, guides, swimming etc. Dad and Mom were implementers of the Association for the Mentally Retarded, now known as COR Enterprises, and helped with many activities and fundraising for the school and COR. Mom was always looking after people. She looked after her parents, grandmother, Dad, and all of her children and grandchildren. She knew what she liked and how she believed things should be done. Her grandchildren might tell you that she loved to play crokinole, Kismet, card games, and completing jig saw puzzles and crosswords. She made thousands of chocolate chip cookies and a special event included seven salads on the dinner table. Her children might mention her sharp wit, her love of rocking chairs, hours of baking, knitted afghans and dish clothes, "coaching" as the Blue Jays played ball, and how she instilled her beliefs of right and wrong in all of us. At her request, there will be no funeral service. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Hamiota, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to COR Enterprises, 364 Park Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 7A8 or a charity of your choice if so desired.
