Obituary of Joseph Carlton Youdell

YOUDELL: Joseph Carlton Youdell passed away peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with his children by his side. Joe was born on February 14, 1930 in Ambleside, England. He attended the Kelsick Grammar School from 1948-1950, where he excelled in athletics. He held more sporting records at one time than anyone in the school's history. His love of athletics translated into a career of teaching physical education. He started his career as a teacher in Kidderminster, England. On August 19, 1966, he moved to Cranberry Portage, Manitoba where he taught at the residential school. He moved to Brandon where he completed his Bachelor of Education in Physical Education in 1973. He split his teaching duties between Meadows and Linden Lanes Elementary Schools in Brandon and the local school in Alexander. Joe selflessly volunteered his time and was very active in the Brandon School Division No. 40 Physical Education team. He helped organize the city track and field meet, cross-country runs and swimming programs. He also enjoyed coaching soccer and teaching ladies' fitness. Joe benefited from having a 'booming voice' which made the use of whistles in the gymnasium unnecessary. Joe retired from teaching at Linden Lanes in 1995. Joe was an avid fisherman and was an accomplished blues piano player with a soft singing voice. He also enjoyed oil painting, reading and sipping on a good port. He is survived by his son Richard (Andrena) and their children Frederick and William, his daughter Dorinda and her children Charlotte and Alexandra, and their mother Diana. Joe was predeceased by his parents Richard and Elsie Youdell, his brother Allan and his son Mathew. In keeping with Joseph's wishes, there will be no service.
