Obituary of Ruby Isabel Horne

HORNE: It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our precious mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ruby Isabel Horne, beloved wife of the late George Alexander Horne. Mum passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Dinsdale Personal Care Home, Brandon, MB, in her 94th year. Left to cherish her memory are her loving children George and Marilyn Horne, grandson Sean, of Whitecourt, AB; Howard and Gina Horne, grandchildren Leslie and Shaun (great-grandchildren Cohen, Declan, Renner); Kevin and Lisa, and Ryan, of St. Albert, AB; Aynsley and Reg Helwer, grandchildren Jess and Nevin Stobbe; Andrew, Carolyn and Adam of Brandon, MB; and Heather and David Whistle, grandsons Jackson and Brandon, of Kelowna, BC. Mum was also predeceased by her infant son, John; her parents and two brothers, Charles and Frank Butcher. She will also be sadly missed by dear relatives and friends in Brandon, Neepawa, Winnipeg, Victoria, Australia and England. Mum was born in Collie, Western Australia on June 20, 1919. She was educated in Auckland, N.Z. and England. In December of 1947, following the War, she sailed on the Mauretania from England to New York, then travelled via train to Winnipeg to stay with relatives. In January 1948, she was employed as a Payroll Accountant. Mum met Dad at a dance at the YMCA, and they were married on December 8, 1951 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Winnipeg. They lived in Virden, Neepawa, Brandon, and then in 1997, moved from Winnipeg to Victoria, BC, where they enjoyed seven wonderful years. In February 2005, Mum and Dad decided to return to Brandon, where they enjoyed living at Riverheights Terrace together until Dad's passing in 2009. Mum was able to remain at the Terrace with the help of the wonderful ladies of Caring Companions who enabled Mum to maintain her independence until she moved to Dinsdale Personal Care Home in December of 2012. Our family would like to thank Dr. L. Moller and the wonderful staff of both Dinsdale Personal Care Home and Caring Companions and for their excellent care, concern and kindness shown to our dear Mum, as well as to our family. Mum was very talented and creative. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and knitting, and always had a project on the go. She was an excellent seamstress and knit many beautiful sweaters, baby outfits and blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mum kept her hands busy with a variety of needlepoint projects. She also enjoyed spending summers at our family cottage at Clear Lake. Mum took great interest in what her family was doing and liked to be kept up-to-date on what was happening in their lives. In Mum's words, "her pride and joy was always her loving family." Our family has been so blessed to have such a wonderful, loving, caring and kind mum. Mum was an active member of many organizations, particularly the Order of the Eastern Star, having recently been presented with a certificate for 70 years of faithful service. Mum's steadfast faith sustained her throughout the years as she was active in all the Anglican parishes where Mum and Dad lived. A memorial service to celebrate Mum's life will be held at St. Matthew's Cathedral, 403 – 13th Street, Brandon on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. Committal of her ashes will be in the Cathedral Columbarium alongside her beloved husband, George. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Mum may be made to the St. Matthew's Cathedral Building Fund, 403-13th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4P9 or to Dinsdale Personal Care Home, 510-6th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 3N9.
