Jeanette Verna Robertson
Born July 23rd 1943, our mom was named after the famous actress and singer Jeanette MacDonald. It was discovered years later that, as she put it, her voice was only good for singing to children and in the shower.
Eldest child of Stephen and Pearl Melnick, she was baptized Jeanette Verna Melnick. Mom is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Wallace Robertson, their sons Adrian (Coralee) and James.
Mom was always interested in genealogy and while we don't have enough room to include all those who are important to our family and still living, we can at least provide a list of extended family who has also survived her. Jeanette's brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Adeline Melnick, their daughters Charissa and Loriena and their children. Cousins; Geri (Don) [children Scott and Dawn and families] Nielson, Donna Requeima, Bev [Brett and Candice] Lockhart.
On Dad's side and in no particular order she is survived by Debbie (Dan) [April, Ashley and Donald and families] Campbell, Donna (John) [David, Holly and Derek and families] Scinocca, Jim (Margaret) [Alexander James, Nicholas and Jonathan and families] Murray.
Finally, there are the neighborhood kids, as well as friends of Adrian, James and Coralee and any strays from the community of Split Lake that Adrian and Coralee brought home for holidays. All of them, have at one time or another stated that Mom was their second and/or chosen mother. At the hospital my cousins Dawn and Charissa in synchronicity said, “Jeanette had long arms. She held the family together.”
She was always involved in the community and was among the first Block Parents in Winnipeg. She enjoyed going with Wallace to the Winnipeg Amateur Movie Maker meetings and helped the other wives make it a family. For many years she worked with her friend Netti Nikkel at LaVerendrye School as lunch ladies and both had been on the parent council.
Prior to settling down and becoming a domestic engineer, she was a cook at Assiniboine Hospital in Brandon, kitchen staff at the Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital, Personnel Department Westfair Foods and child care for " take a break" YMCA.
Fun facts: Her hobbies were reading, puzzles especially the crossword and genealogy. Her favorite color is red; she enjoyed dancing greatly, especially with Wallace with whom she could still cut a rug with as recently as 2019, leaving younger couples to shame. Two of her favorite television shows were Coronation Street and Murdoch Mysteries. Mom was also a breast cancer survivor of nearly 20 years.
Pneumonia landed her in the hospital, but they discovered that she had colorectal cancer which had spread to the liver. She passed away peacefully without pain and surrounded by many loving family members at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Regarding those who couldn't come, she at least heard their voice on the phone, though she was not verbally responsive.
A time of visitation will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, February 27, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the same location on Friday, February 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.
Mom has often stated that she will graciously accept flowers but expressly declines donations.
