Obituary of Howard Roy Hinch
HINCH: Howard Roy Hinch: aka H. R., How, Howie
June 21, 1931 - June 22, 2010
Howard passed away in the early morning at Hillcrest Place the day after his 79th birthday. He was born in the farm home of his parents, Florence (Matthews) and John S. Hinch at S.W. 2--10-20 R.M. of Whitehead in the Roseland District.
His early life was spent doing chores and other "boy" things with his brother J.E. Both attended Roseland School until Grade eight when he quit school to farm with his Dad. He worked for a short while for Relf's Plumbing and Heating and passed time for a few years at the Brandon Stock Yards.
In his late 20's he followed in the footsteps of many country boys and married the school teacher - in this case Elizabeth Smith of the Oakleigh District S.W. of Rapid City in October 1958 after the crop was in the bin.
Their new home was the first RTM home that many had seen, it being built in Carman. It was situated on the farm at N.E. 33-9-20 across the road from Ken and Elsie Stanley.
He enjoyed snowmobiling and took part in Saturday couples night and the Sunday afternoon runs with whomever congregated in the Hinch yard. He was one of the original Roseland Curling Club members and the Roseland Snowplow Club. He and Ken Stanley and skip C.K. Williamson and whom ever else they could con into curling with the Alexander Bonspiel had the dubious distinction of never having won a game.
He retired from farming in the fall of 1994 and an auction was held in April 1995. Howard and Elizabeth continued to reside on the farm until his poor health precipitated a move to Brandon in April 2006. He was admitted to BGH in December 2006 and subsequently to Hillcrest Place in March 2007.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; son Ward of Portage la Prairie and his son Brodie, son Trevor of Erickson and his daughter Jessica, daughter Tami and husband Shane Benson; cousins Donalda (Hinch) Pilling and Ross (Betty) Hinch of Brandon as well as cousins out of province. The "Outlaws" Jeanne (Ken) Holland, Portage la Prairie, Evan (Margaret) Smith, Rapid City, Erna Honeyman (Charlie Hope), Brandon.
Howard was predeceased by his father John (Jack) in September 1954, mother Florence April 1991 and only brother J.E. New Years Eve 1963.
A brief ceremony was held at the Brandon Cemetery on Friday June 25, 2010 with Rev. Joy Ruddock officiating and guests by invitation. A public reception followed at the Victoria Inn.
